Dr James Cheng-Chung Wei is Attending Physician and Associate Professor at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital (CSMUH) in Taichung, Taiwan. He is also Chief of the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology and Director of the Chinese Medicine Clinical Trial Center at CSMUH.
After completing his training in rheumatology and clinical immunology at Taichung Veterans General Hospital and Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Dr Wei undertook a clinical fellowship at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, UK, under the supervision of Professor Andrei Calin, one of the world’s leading experts in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Dr Wei subsequently pursued a research fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Division of Rheumatology in California, USA, under Professor David Yu, investigating the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritis.
Prior to his current roles, Dr Wei was appointed Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Chia-Yi Veterans Hospital in Chia-Yi, Taiwan, obtaining his PhD based on his study of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of AS. He has published widely in leading peer-reviewed journals, such as the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Arthritis & Rheumatism, PLoS One, Rheumatology, Journal of Rheumatology, Clinical Rheumatology and the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases. He is currently an editorial board member of the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases.
Dr Wei has been instrumental in establishing CSMUH’s General Clinical Trial Center, where he also serves as Director. Furthermore, he chaired the Institutional Review Board and Ethic Committee of CSMUH in 2005. Besides, Dr Wei is an active member of the American Clinical Research Professional and the American College of Rheumatology. He has set up an AS databank and served as President of the AS Caring Society in Taiwan. His current major interests are translational research in AS, clinical trials and traditional Chinese Medicine.
